Even if you didn’t see the actual hit, if you were on Eddie’s on Friday afternoon, you heard it.
Hundreds of bewildered students enjoying the warm weather saw a man dressed in Fordham athletics gear jump over the fence and sprint straight to the middle of Eddie’s, followed by several cafeteria workers. He approached a Fordham student and, with one sickening punch to the face, knocked him to the ground.
The cafeteria workers caught up and restrained him, while Sodexo General Manager Brian Poteat chased after them a few hundred feet behind and scolded them for leaving their posts. Director of Security John Carroll and several other security personnel were on the scene within about 30 seconds.
It turned out that the students on Eddie’s only witnessed half of the incident. Minutes before, in the cafeteria, the student who was eventually knocked down by a single hit began punching the Ram mascot. According to witnesses, it started playfully, but he became more and more violent until the Ram head came off.
When the student saw the extremely well-built man under the mascot costume, he ran.
The mascot took the rest of his costume off and chased him onto Eddie’s, located him quickly, and laid out the now-famous hit.
One side of the student’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. When Carroll went to restrain him, he resisted, pleading to be allowed to go back to his room.
Many witnesses suspected the student was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
When Carroll and other security personnel tried to put him in a security vehicle, he resisted more violently, and security tried to put handcuffs on him. The mascot stood quietly and agreed to go to the hospital calmly. Both were eventually taken to the hospital.
