United Student Government won another victory on library hours last week as hours were once again extended, this time to include the hours between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

Executive President John Tully Gordon, FCRH '10, made the announcement last week after negotiations with Senior Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Stephen Freedman.

"Once more, I congratulate the students and clubs that were instrumental in making this step possible," Gordon said. "I would personally like to express my sincere gratitude for the willingness of Dr. Freedman and the office of Academic Affairs to not only hear the concerns of our student body, but to give them serious consideration and ultimately act upon them."

Freedman, whose division has authority over the library, was originally responsible for closing the 24-hour zone before the fall semester because of budget cuts. Two weeks ago, after student uproar and pressure from Progressive Students for Justice and USG, the hours were extended to 2 a.m., meaning the library will now only be closed for about four-and-a-half hours on school nights.

Gordon, however, does not seem to be letting up on pressuring Freedman for a complete restoration of library hours.

"We will continue working to improve the 24-hour zone, and I look forward to the progress that this re-energized working relationship between USG and the Office of Academic Affairs will bring to our community," he said.

Gordon said that USG was planning a town hall meeting for students to discuss the issue with Freedman in December.

At least in the first few days, students are utilizing the extended hours at the library. About 25 students came to the library on Nov. 9 from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. One took advantage of printers to print a copy of a paper, while others wanted reliable Internet.

"When it comes time to register for classes, I don't like to take a chance, so I always come straight here," Kim Barnum, FCRH '11, said. "I would never stay here past 2 a.m., so that's that perfect amount of time. The only time I'd come before 8 a.m. is for registration."
