Tom Suozzi, county executive of Nassau County on Long Island and a Fordham Law School graduate, conceded his reelection bid after learning he was down by 386 votes in a recount on Dec. 1. Suozzi, a Democrat, lost to Republican county legislator Eric Mangano in the surprising result.
“Nobody saw this coming, and if anyone told you they could predict this outcome they’re lying,” Suozzi said.
Mangano, though, apparently thought we could oust the former Ram all along.
“My expectation from the beginning was to run a great grassroots campaign, and I understood there was a disconnect between the county government and the people,” he said.
Nassau County voters were apparently angry about high property taxes – Nassau has the second highest in the nation, with only Westchester homeowners paying more – that were not fully adjusted to post-financial crisis residential values.
“People are angry about property taxes, and they held the county executive accountable,” Suozzi said.
Suozzi was thought to have potential for an extended career in politics, especially after he managed to become the first Democratic county executive in Nassau in over 40 years. However, he suffered a defeat in the Democratic primary for governor in 2006, losing to prostitute-consorting state attorney general Eliot Spitzer. He then lost out to Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand for an appointment to fill Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat.
