Dominican President Addresses the Past and Future of His Nation

A procession of unmarked police and government vehicles pulled in front of Keating Hall on Sept. 24 at 8:30 p.m. His Excellency Leonel Fernández, the president of the Dominican Republic, rode in one of those cars. More than 400 students - many of Dominican descent - professors, and others sat and stood inside a cramped auditorium in Keating waiting to hear him speak.

Bronx Community Board Objects to Bars

A local community board wants to shut the tap on more bars in the Fordham area. According to the New York Daily News, Bronx Community Board 6, which covers the areas of Fordham, East Tremont and Belmont, wants to convince the State Liquor Authority to review the overpopulation of bars in the area.

Such a weekend on the Fordham campus could only mean one thing: Campus Activities Board Fall Fest was back to entertain the masses. Dean of Students Christopher Rodgers signed off on the revised and revamped document late Thursday night, and Caroline Whelan, assistant director of leadership and commuter student services, gave USG the news about halfway through last week's senate meeting.

Political and Community Service Organizations Work to Register Fordham Students

On Sept. 24, the Community Service Program held a barbeque on McGinley Lawn to kick off its "Get Out and Vote" campaign. The campaign, spearheaded by the Community Service program with help from College Republicans, College Democrats and the Office of Student Leadership and Community Development, is part of the National Campus Voter Registration Project.

The College Democrats and College Republicans had their first debate on Tuesday night in the McGinley Ballroom and talked about a few of the most important issues of the election as Nov. 4 draws closer. The debaters hardly mentioned John McCain or Barack Obama; instead they presented their own views on various topics.

"The U.S. is a very innovative country, and while our innovation got us into this crisis, it will also get us out," Dean of the College of Business Administration Donna Rapaccioli said.

Faculty Searches for New Arts and Sciences Dean

On Sept. 26, Dr. Stephen Freedman, senior vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer, sent an e-mail ­to the Fordham community announcing the formation of a search committee for a new dean of the faculty of arts and sciences. The dean of the faculty of arts and sciences is responsible for faculty matters within the arts and sciences disciplines at Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham College at Lincoln Center and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Blackboard E-mail Policy Changes

At the end of this semester, Fordham students will no longer be able to register a non-Fordham e-mail address through the Blackboard system. Students were informed of the change through an e-mail sent by the Office of Information Technology. Fleur Eshghi, executive director of instructional technology and academic computing, noted that the policy is being implemented to protect the security of data.
