In the age-old tradition of weekly "What's Going On's," your Arts & Entertainment editor leaves you with a list of New York City's summer happenings. Whether you are staying in New York for summer classes or you simply cannot get enough urban life, these events are sure to make their way onto your summer calendar.
Shakespeare in the Park- People have enjoyed these free Shakespearian performances for decades. Here are some helpful factoids and tips: Attendance can climb as high as 1,500 people, so reserve your tickets as soon as possible. There is a two-ticket limit per person, so if you want to go with your family and friends, you need to have others reserve tickets as well. Regular attendees reserve tickets months in advance, so reserve yours as soon as possible. If the performance is cancelled due to inclement weather, the tickets are non-exchangeable. Rooftop Films- This event is for film buffs and aspiring filmmakers alike. Rooftop Films hosts free premieres of independent and underground films from filmmakers around the world. The premieres are not partial towards first-time filmmakers. Productions are screened on the rooftop of The Old American Can Factory in Brooklyn, as well as the Automotive High School in Williamsburg. For more information, visit www.rooftopfilms.com.
Movies in Bryant Park- If you are ever in Midtown on a Monday night and you feel like catching a classic flick, make it an evening at Bryant Park. The grass opens for lounging and picnicking at 5:00 p.m., and films begin screening at sunset, which ranges between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Last summer's screenings included Psycho (1960), Casablanca (1942), Annie Hall (1977) and The Thing From Another World (1951). The park fills up quickly, so be sure to get there an hour prior to the grass opening. The park also tends to get extremely crowded, so getting there early to reserve ample space will be to your benefit. Food and beverages are welcome as well. The screenings open in June and close in August. Call 212-512-5700 for more information.
