Men's Tennis

Fordham University's men's tennis team continued its downward spiral this spring. The week started off with a 7-0 loss to Vassar College.

The Rams fell behind quickly, losing the doubles point. Freshmen Nick Kelly and Ken Fukumoto did win their third doubles match, but unfortunately that was the only win of the day for the Rams. The singles matches were not much of an improvement. Junior Pat Tool participated in the most exciting match of the day, even if it ended in defeat. Tool won the first set by a score of 7-5. The second set was lost in a tiebreaker, 7-6. The third and final set went into another tiebreaker as Tool lost a heartbreaker by a score of 12-10.

The week continued against Hofstra and another 7-0 loss. The Rams started off the match by losing all three doubles matches to lose the doubles point. The Hofstra Pride then capped the shutout by winning all six singles matches, though the Rams had a bit of a better showing this time around with two of the singles matches going into a third-set tiebreaker. Freshmen Brandon Abbatiello and Fukumoto both had strong showings before succumbing to their opponents late in the match.

Fordham University's men's tennis team will be in action against Sacred Heart University on April 16 as they try to right the ship and finish out the last few weeks of the season on a strong note.

Track and Field

The men's and women's track and field team participated in two events over the week. First up, the squads traveled to Kings Point, NY, on April 12 to participate in the Coach O Invitational.

The Rams had two athletes on the top of the podium as senior Melissa Salerno took the women's mile in 5:13.15, seven seconds ahead of the closet finisher, and junior Matt DiBuono won the hammer throw with a toss of 58.81m, throwing an impressive 10 meters farther than the second-place finisher.

The women's 4x400 A relay team won the event, doing so in a season-best time of 4:00.66.

Three days later the two teams competed in the St. John's Monday Meeting in Jamaica, NY.

This time, the Rams would have three different individual winners as junior Jeana Fletcher, freshman Augustus Gleason and junior Andrew Spanos all won their respective events. Fletcher won the long jump with a leap of 15'5", Gleason won the 400m hurdles posting a time of 1:00.39 and Spanos came in victorious in the 800m with a time of 2:05.65.

The track and field team will next compete in the Metropolitan Championships in Bergen, NJ on April 18 and 19.
