Ah, spring. Everyone on Fordham's campus gets soaked by the torrential downpours, the gardeners start replanting the tulips before they've fully bloomed, and Eddie's starts to fill up - with garbage. Earth Day is April 22 and I'm pretty sure Mother Nature is not happy with the world. There are so many environmental concerns right now. From global warming to pollution, it seems that we are not taking care of our environment.

So how do we celebrate this upcoming holiday? Do we do the same-old, same-old and plant a tree? Or do we try to do something different that will make a bigger impact on the world? At Fordham, we don't seem too upset about all of our waste. At least that's the impression I get from every warm day we've had. At night if I walk by Eddie's, I could guess that there would be at least a bag full of trash strewn about. There are at least three garbage cans around Eddie's. When you get up, walk over to one and put your empty water bottle in it. Yes, we do have a maintenance staff, but they have other things to do besides clean up after inconsiderate kids.

Last year I participated in Boost Mobile Rock Corp, part of the Got 2 Give 2 Get program. We went to Orchard Beach for a four-hour clean-up. There was a disgusting amount of trash on the beach, from half-eaten sandwiches to thrown-away cell phones. After our four hours there, there was still a ton of garbage - that's how bad it was. What are we to do about this disregard for the earth?

I think it's great that we are coming out with environmentally friendly products, but I don't think it does any good to buy a hybrid if you are just going to throw your wrapper out the window. Trash is the big thing that bothers me. It's so simple just to put it in a garbage can. I haven't even asked you to recycle, which requires you to separate items into different bins. By all means, buy "green" products, but don't think that cancels out all the water bottles you threw on the side of the road.
