The women's tennis team could officially be renamed "the comeback kids," as the girls' win on Thursday against the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders brought them back from their two losses this past weekend. The win was not a hard feat according to sophomore Martina Featherston.

"This week's opponents were definitely not as good as last week's," she said.

In addition to the Highlanders being an easier opponent, the match was also a cinch because the Lady Rams were acclimated to the recent windy weather the New York area has been experiencing.

"Last week's match against Rhode Island University was windy, so that prepared us for the wind this week," Featherston said.

Junior Dominique Liguori won the first singles match against NJIT's Iulia Doci in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1, while freshman Catherine Kellner won the second singles match against Isha Toor, 6-2 and 6-0. Ellenoira Featherston won the third singles match against Fatima Kasem, 6-4 and 6-0 while her sister, Martina Featherston, lost her singles match against Fanny Aizer, 6-0 and 6-0.

"I lost my singles this week but I won my doubles and I personally feel [it's because] I'm a better doubles player," Martina Featherston said.

The Lady Rams also got the doubles point this week, as they won two out of the three matches. Liguori and Ellenoira Featherston won their doubles match against NJIT's Doci and Kasem, 8-4, while Kellner and Martina Featherston won their doubles match against Toor and Dasa Stanmirovic, 8-4 as well. Freshmen Brittany Russell and Elizabeth Stall lost their doubles match to Chiori Kioke and Aizier, 6-0 and 6-0.

Martina Featherston attributes the doubles win to a new emphasis on teamwork and more team practices.

"Doubles is a team effort and you need to feel comfortable with your partner so this week we had more team practice to be able to get our strategy together," she said.

And whatever that strategy was, it was a winning one. The Lady Rams are now 5-8 for the season and will be back in action this Thursday, April 10 against Long Island University at the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts in the Bronx.
