The guest of a Fordham student suffered serious injuries after plummeting three stories into the alley next to Terra Nova House.

A guest at one of Fordham's off-campus residence halls was seriously injured after falling from the roof of 2500 Hoffman Street, one of two three-story buildings that together comprise Terra Nova House. The accident, which occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, left the victim in "serious but stable condition," according to a security alert issued later that morning.
The injured guest, whose name has not been released, and the brother of a Fordham student were visiting from out of state at the time of the incident. According to John Carroll, Fordham's director of security, the guest was part of a group that had attended a Yankee game on Friday night. They then went to a couple of bars before returning to 2504 Hoffman around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
After spending time in the host student's ground-floor apartment, the guest left the room, went up a staircase, climbed an emergency ladder and opened the emergency hatch door leading to the roof. He then crossed from 2504 to 2500 before falling three stories and landing in the alley below.
One Terra Nova resident who was asleep at the time of incident remembered waking up to a loud noise around 2:50 a.m. The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, assumed that it was the sound of the guest hitting the street.
"As soon as he fell there were horrible moaning noises," the resident said. "He was moaning pretty badly."
Some of the other students reportedly watched the guest as he climbed to the roof. However, his reason for utilizing the emergency ladder and hatch is unknown, as are the exact circumstances surrounding the fall.
"It's a little unclear as to whether he was hanging from the roof," Carroll said.
Carroll said that the guest, who was over 21, was intoxicated at the time of the incident. It was also raining.
"Rooftops are inherently dangerous places and even more dangerous during inclement weather, which was the current condition during this incident," the security alert said.
