Listen up, gumshoe. The world as we know it is a dangerous place. If television can be counted on to relay nothing but the gospel of truth (and we all know by now that it can, or else what are we doing here?), then much of that danger is caused by murderers, thieves and a variety of innocent-looking, supposedly blameless characters who pay their taxes, eat their vegetables, and just so happen to be wanted for atrocious and appalling crimes.

For every thesis (in this case, an evil mustache-twirling rogue), however, there is an antithesis - a superhero, perhaps, or a dashingly handsome police officer driven by righteousness alone, raring to save the day and the lives of the innocent. In this world full of "Law and Order"-esque crime scene drama, there is always someone playing the villain, someone else playing the victim, and yet another playing the knight in shining armor. Let's just hope that no one here ever experiences the realities of the first two, and the reality of the last only on occasion.

That said, I realize that this is a rather serious topic; everyone wants to avoid dangerous situations at all costs, and for good reason, but many people draw the proverbial short straw. The fact of the matter remains that we all live in the middle of one of the world's grandest cities, and with so many people in motion all of the time, it's easy to find oneself in unwanted situations. It can happen to the best and the worst of us, which is why I'm even talking about this type of problem at all. Not to sound morbid or, you know, terrifying, but the only thing one can do to face the problems in the world is to know what they are and what to do when you come up against them - unless you're a tiny, blonde, taser-wielding, crime-solving teenager, that is. (And no, this is not some shameless ploy to get more people to watch my favorite canceled television show in the world, Veronica Mars, which just so happens to feature the aforementioned crime-solving teenager and her private investigator father. Incidentally, all three delightful seasons are available in Walsh Library for your viewing pleasure. Just saying.)
