It was a losing weekend for the women's tennis team. This past Saturday and Sunday they fell to both Rhode Island and Stony Brook University, but there were a lot of factors that added to these losses, including inclement weather, lack of practice time and lack of players.

It seems as though the women's tennis team hit a rough patch this weekend, losing one walk-on player to a family emergency and another permanently of her own volition.

"We're a small team to begin with," freshman Catherine Pando said. "We need six players to play and now the team only has seven."

In addition to two players being absent from this past weekend's matches, the team also felt ill-prepared, as it did not have much practice time over break.

"Our team didn't go away together on spring break so we just practiced one or two days by ourselves," sophomore Martina Featherston said. "So the Rhode Island game was rough."

Finally, the weather this past weekend left the Lady Rams wishing for sunny skies, as the wind and cold affected their game, and ultimately their comfort, on the outdoor courts.

Through it all, the women's tennis team is humbled by its experience.

"I know it's hard to lose, especially when you work so hard in practice, but I definitely think there's something to learn from losing," Pando said. "It makes winning later on that much more important. Our coach doesn't put too much pressure on us if we lose [and] we show a certain sportsmanship following defeat."

Defeat was the word this past weekend, with Fordham losing 6-1 to the Rhode Island Rams on Saturday and 5-2 to the Stony Brook Seawolves on Sunday, leaving the Lady Rams at a 4-8 record for the year.

In the Rhode Island match, Fordham started strong with junior Dominique Liguori's win over Rhode Island's Nyssa Peele, 6-0. However, it was all downhill from there.

Though Liguori and senior Ellenoira Featherston won the first doubles match 8-5, partners sophomore Martina Featherston and freshman Catherine Kellner, and partners freshman Brittany Russell and sophomore Elizabeth Stall, lost their matches 8-3 and 8-1. This lost the team the doubles point.
