Changes Made to Registration Tools to Facilitate Process

The 2008-2009 registration process has been changed in order to facilitate a better registration experience.

A significant change to the overall registration system is that course offerings for the summer 2008, fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters will be included on the OASIS system and in the course booklets. Spring 2009 registration, however, will still occur in October or November of next year.

Both the course booklets (the physical printing of all the course offerings) and the OASIS website (where students can view course offerings and where registration ultimately occurs) underwent aesthetic changes as decided by the Fordham University Arts and Sciences Council. The process began in November and is being implemented in the upcoming weeks.

"The changes originated with the council, were approved by the committee and are currently being implemented by the deans," Rosemary Cooney, associated dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, said.

The council looked to other universities and faculty for advice about the changes, specifically when the council decided to include courses available for a full academic year rather than just a semester.

"This is the standard among better schools," said Cooney. "The faculty approached us with the complaint that other colleges display courses not just for the semester, but for an entire academic year. This will allow students to plan their schedules ahead."

Including both semesters is convenient for students who wish to put off a requirement but were previously unsure if certain sections would still be available. It is also helpful for students on a strict academic track, such as the pre-health professions, where students in these academic tracks have to take certain courses specific semesters with different pre-requisite and co-requisite offerings.

According to Cooney, another significant change is that the course booklets have been redesigned and streamlined. The new booklets contain the following essential information: a core curriculum guide (a list of all the core course requirements from freshman to senior year), all summer 2008 course offerings, liberal arts and sciences core requirements for freshman seminars, sophomore literature, American pluralism, global studies, senior values, all courses offered by interdisciplinary programs, cross listed courses, and service learning courses.
