The Fordham men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the Atlantic 10 championships in Buffalo, N.Y. from Feb. 20-23. Both the men's and women's teams finished fifth in the championships and had some extremely impressive performances. In doing this, they fulfilled the hopes of head coach Steve Potskian and set the two teams up for even higher goals next year.
The Rams finished the first day of competition with the men's team in third place and the women's in fourth. The men's team started out the competition finishing fifth in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:33.75. The relay featured freshman William Colton, junior Sean Terry, and sophomores Ryan and Justin Coombs.
In one meter diving, senior Donato Callara finished second with 562.55 points, breaking the previous Fordham record of 554.15. Callara earned Second Team All-A-10 honors for his performance in the event.
In the 800 freestyle relay the men finished sixth, with Justin Coombs, sophomore Eric Pendergrast, freshman Brian Jucas, and Ryan Coombs setting a new Fordham record of 6:52.42.
On the women's side, the Rams finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay, with freshman Christina Cosentino, sophomore Nicole Marshall, sophomore Caitlin Napoli, and freshman Amanda Ciccone earning a time of 1:45.95 and setting a new school record. The previous record from 2003 was 1:47.06. Fordham finished fifth in the 800 yard freestyle relay in a time of 7:39.53 with senior Amanda Irving, sophomore Tressa Dunn, Marshall, and Napoli.
After the second day of competition, the women's team was in fifth place and the men's team in sixth. On the men's side, Ryan Coombs and sophomore Lucien Monson finished ninth and tenth, respectively, in the 500 freestyle with times of 4:37.07 and 4:38.53. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Prendergast, Colton, junior Richard Butler and Silbernagel earned eighth place with a time of 1:26.38. For the women's team, Napoli placed third in the 500 yard freestyle in 4:59.63. In the 200-yard Individual Medley, Marshall broke the Rams 200 IM record of 2:07.46 from 2004 with a time of 2:05.84, finishing fourth. Dunn, Cosentino, Marshall and Ciccone finished fifth in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.92. In the women's one meter diving, senior Marisa Colangelo placed fifth with a score of 375.25 points.
