American Women in Radio and Television Inc. recently honored Fordham's radio station, WFUV, with four Gracie Allen Awards.
Winners from WFUV will receive the awards on June 18th, 2007, at the Manhattan Marriott Marquis and on June 19th, 2007 at Tavern on the Green.
The Gracie Allen Awards "recognize exemplary programming created for women in all areas of electronic media," according to a press release on the Fordham Webpage. AWRT was founded in 1951 and is committed to promoting women in the media industry. AWRT's mission "is to advance the impact of women in the electronic media and allied fields by educating, advocating and acting as a resource to its members and the industry," Christi Swanner, AWRT president said in the press release.
Nora Flaherty, producer and host of WFUV, won the award for "Outstanding Talk Show" for her May 27, 2006 episode of "Fordham Conversations." The episode featured an interview with German lecturer Anne-Katrin Titze, discussing the differences between Grimm fairy tales and their Disney counterparts.
"It's so exciting to be part of a group [of winners] that includes so many impressive men and women," said Flaherty.
Kenny Pordan, FCRH '07 and a narrator at WFUV, and Tim Smith, FCRH '07 and a writer/producer at WFUV, won the Gracie Award for "Outstanding Sports Program." Their segment, "Jets Football for Women," covered a jets camp that taught women how to play football was said to clearly exemplify the goals of AWRT.
Pordon said, "It is an honor to win the prestigious Gracie award for outstanding local sports program. It is an award that recognizes excellence from film, TV, radio, and new media in programming that deals with issues regarding women. It is great to be recognized with so many other talented people. I am also happy for WFUV, who has taught me so much, to get this national recognition."
Megan Blondel, FCRH '08 and anchor at WFUV, won the award for "Outstanding Anchor, Individual Achievement."
