Two weeks ago, the ongoing discussion of Iraq took on new life at Rose Hill. Qubad Talabany, the Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government to the United States, came all the way from Washington D.C. to speak with Fordham students. Talabany is a member of the KRG, an administrative government for the entire Kurdistan region in Iraq.
This week Myspace will introduce a political channel called the "Impact Channel" which was created to decrease the level of apathy among college students in America. The channel will focus on the 2008 presidential election; it's a collaboration of links to the candidates' campaigns on the both the Democratic and Republican sides.
It is a good time to be part of the College of Business Administration. According to the March 19 issue of BusinessWeek Magazine, Fordham University's CBA program has climbed 14 spots - from No. 48 to No. 34 - in a national ranking of undergraduate business programs.
The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University issued a report March 15 about substance abuse at college campuses in United States. The report, entitled Wasting the Best and the Brightest: Substance Abuse at America's Colleges and Universities, is raising eyebrows across the country of people concerned about the higher education system that is supposed to be providing the leaders of tomorrow.
American Women in Radio and Television Inc. recently honored Fordham's radio station, WFUV, with four Gracie Allen Awards. Winners from WFUV will receive the awards on June 18th, 2007, at the Manhattan Marriott Marquis and on June 19th, 2007 at Tavern on the Green.
On March 8, members of Women in Communications and other interested students went to hear singer/ songwriter Meredith LeVande's presentation entitled "Women, Pop Music, and Pornography" in the McGinley Ballroom. This topic was especially timely because March 8 is National Women's Day, part of National Women's History Month.
Sodexho, Fordham's food service provider, recently allied with Fordham students to create a Student Culinary Council. Brian Poteat, General Manager of Hospitality Services at Fordham University, said the "purpose of the Student Culinary Council (SCC) is to create a platform where students have the opportunity to work with Fordham University Hospitality Services to help enhance all the aspects of Dining Services here at Fordham.
New York Senator Carl Kruger recently revealed his plans to introduce a bill banning the use of portable electronic devices in crosswalks in major cities. The Senator's bill will ban the use of devices such as music players, video players, cell phones, smart phones and gaming devices.
