A few weeks ago, I wrote a scathing review of the song "We Are The World." While the cause was good, the song itself was terrible. Now, we have another charity single released, but it's performed by only one person–American Idol winner Kris Allen. In cooperation with Idol Gives Back and the U.N. Relief Fund for Haiti, all proceeds of his cover of The Beatles' "Let It Be" will go to both Haitian relief efforts and other beneficiaries of Idol Gives Back. Again, for the purposes of the review, I'm reviewing the song as a song.

It's always a daunting task to do a Beatles cover, especially for a song as popular and as powerful as "Let It Be." Kris Allen delivers a stripped-down cover of the song with only an acoustic guitar, piano and minimal percussion for instrumental accompaniment. In a word, his cover was respectable. What sets Kris Allen apart from other American Idol contestants and winners is that he does not over-sing. I believe Simon Cowell actually knocked him for that, saying that he sounds like someone jamming in his garage. Unfortunately, Mr. Cowell, that laid-back, raw sound is the source of much of Kris Allen's appeal and success. While many people tend to be distracted by vocal runs and curves, Allen focuses on just singing the song. This track is no exception. He sings this classic without much fuss, changing just enough of the song to suit his style without completely overshadowing the original. It is not groundbreaking or extraordinary by any means, but it certainly does the song justice.

Unlike the horrific "We Are the World," Kris Allen delivers a simple rendition of a well-known classic, "Let It Be." He is releasing this track to benefit Haitian relief as well as charities supported by Idol Gives Back. It is a solid song well-worth the purchase price ($1.29 on the iTunes store). Allen's cover is a good song for a good cause, and I encourage everyone to give it a listen and help out.

RATING – 7.5/10

I thought Kris' performance of Let it Be was beautiful! He captured me during the Idol competition because of his amazing performances. He truly has a gift to 'capture' a song, 'deliver' the message, and sing with 'heart and emotion'. Very few artists can do that, and Kris... well, he's the best! For him it's all about the music and his passion shines through in all his performances. He said he was excited to return to Idol but this time it wasn't about him, it was about the Hatian people and he wanted to do his part to help them out. What a great guy!

Definitely agree. I wish they would make Kris' performance available as a video to purchase. I bought the song, but I keep going back to his performance on YouTube because I love to watch him sing. With him, it's always been about the music. I agree that many who have a limited view of what it means to be successful never really got Kris. In an interview recently, he was asked what it was like to live the dream and part of his answer was that it was humbling. What a positive example. Kris' single "Live Like We're Dying" just went platinum. He as well as his fans are thrilled, but he is still the same guy, singing his heart out with a quiet confidence that is beautiful to behold.

I 10000% percent agree with everything you said. I would only change your rating to an 8 instead of 7.5. I think he at least deserved a B.

The thing I love about Kris -- is he always manages to keep it simple, but give it some heart. I loved it when Jaime Fox said, Kris is not trying to win the vocal olympics. His voice is just so right -- "Let it Be" was done with grace and style. Congratulations, Kris.

I have declared myself Kris Allen's Number One Fan -- yeah, I'm an aging hippie mom -- but I find everything this young man sings so honest and refreshing. I purchased the cut immediately, and have now listened to it at least 50 times. The original show is still in my DVR pile. BUY THIS SONG!!!! It will do your heart good, and Haiti good as well.

It was very moving and I bought the single as soon as it was available. I find his voice so pleasing and his delivery of songs can brings me to tears or to joy/laughter. He has an infectious spirit that really come through in his music. Thanks for shining a light onto this single and I hope it encourages others to check it out on itunes and purchase it.

Some of the judges last year never seemed to get Kris' appeal. Tons of other people do, however. He is a very talented young man.

I absolutely agree! Thanks for the review. You know, Kris made me cry in "Falling Slowly". "Send Me All Your Angels" from his album is also great and so heartfelt. His version of "Let It Be" showed what he meant when he said that his re-visit to AI is all about the Haitians. I love that guy.
