The Back of the Net Feb 2012

Who Won Super Sunday? Last weekend, the English media dubbed Sunday “Super Sunday.” This happens on a few weekends a year in England when four big teams in the Premier League battle it out. For the past five or six years it has usually been the same teams: Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. This year, however, Super Sunday took on a slightly different form. Man United played Arsenal, as per usual, but Arsenal is struggling just to get into the top four and qualify for the Champions League. In the second game, League leader Manchester City took on third place Tottenham Hotspur. Both of these teams are new to the Super Sunday weekend, and the beginning of that match really showed it. Both teams were nervous, but after they began to settle down, the match grew...

The Mighty Spurs

11/29/11 11:59 PM

This weekend was not a good weekend for most of the top teams in the Barclays Premier League. Leaders Manchester City drew 1-1 with Liverpool at Anfield, Champions Manchester United drew 1-1 with Newcastle United and Arsenal drew 1-1 with relegation-battler Fulham. The only two top teams that won this weekend were Chelsea, with a 3-0 victory over Wolves, and Tottenham who beat West Bromwich Albion 3-1 at the Hawthornes. Tottenham really made off like a bandit this weekend, keeping itself in third place in the league, now only seven points behind leaders Man City and only two points behind Man United. Furthermore, Tottenham has a game in hand on both of these teams. If they win their match in hand they can overtake Man United. Spurs also sit top of the recent form guide with...

Sir Alex: 25 Glorious Years

11/15/11 10:35 PM

In the last two decades, Manchester United has been one of the greatest clubs in world football. That is in no small part due to Sir Alex Ferguson. On Nov. 6th 2011, Sir Alex Ferguson celebrated 25 years in charge of Manchester United Football Club. This makes him the fifth longest serving manager ever in European football. In this day and age, not only is 25 years at the top of world football marvelous, but it is truly unique. I can’t see any manager at the pinnacle of the game staying in charge of one club for so long. Sir Alex is also the most successful manager the world has ever seen, winning 12 Premier League titles, nine domestic cups, two European Cups, two World Club Championships, ten Charity Shields, one Cup Winners Cup and one European Super Cup. It is a...

Toon Army

11/9/11 3:02 AM

The 1996/1997 Premier League season was the last time we saw Newcastle United challenging for the Premier League title, in those days Alan Shearer was leading the line for Newcastle, who also had top players like David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Shay Given and Gary Speed all in their ranks. It’s been a humiliating fall from grace for one of England’s biggest clubs, nicknamed the toon, who sit eighth in the all-time Premier League table and is one of the most successful clubs in all of England. It was the 2008/2009 season where Newcastle United made its biggest fall, from the Premier League to the Championship. Shades of Leeds United were beginning to appear. Fans rioting against the ownership of Mike Ashley, and calling for King Kevin or for their Messiah, Alan Shearer, to stay...

You've Awoken a Sleeping Giant

11/2/11 12:53 AM

On Dec. 7, 1941 the empire of Japan launched an attack on the United States of America by bombing Pearl Harbor. The attack prompted Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto to say, "I'm afraid we've awoken a sleeping giant." The following day at a joint session of congress, President Franklin Roosevelt said that this was a day that will live in infamy. Another day that will live in infamy for Manchester United is Oct. 23, the day United lost to Man City 6-1. Since this day most football people have been talking about the shift in power not only in Manchester but in all of England. However what most people are underestimating is the power and strength of Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson. This could be the day that Roberto Mancini says to himself we've awoken a...
