The fashion industry sets clothing trends each season, and these trends are often the result of personal taste rather than something the culture as a whole has agreed on. Therefore, fashion trends change, and it is the job of "fashionistas," such as the girls at Marymount College of Fordham University, to provide new inspiration.

These girls have infused the fashion world with their own unique vision, and have taken their inspiration from areas as varied as video games, London, and the 18th century.

It is not easy being a "fashionista" - just ask the 18 seniors soon to graduate from Marymount's fashion program. These fashion designers and fashion merchandisers worked for months on "Runway '07," Marymount's end-of-the-year fashion show that showcased the innovative styles created by the students themselves.

The show took place on April 27 in the Marymount campus' Spellman Auditorium.

Marymount's "fashionistas" not only designed each fashion worn on the runway, but modeled the looks as well. Their designs ranged from fanciful and sublime to fun and funky.

Some of the design students, like Saori Sakamoto, drew inspiration from sophisticated women, while others, like Karen Alice Melanson, decided to take a playful direction in a line that she calls "American Bombshell."

Holly Corsano contrasted the softness of velvet with the strength of denim in her line, aptly named "Venim."

Catherine MacDonald incorporated lots of detailing and clean lines into her collection "Underpressure," while Liane Farrell designed a line of fantasy lingerie.

Pamela Smith went to "Lover's End" for her inspiration, combining romantic styles from the 18th century with a touch of the masculine. Smith used fabrics such as lace and brocade and paired them with corduroy, wool and linen to create a distinct contemporary image.

Artist Michael Roberts' picture of a girl with a polka-dotted tongue was Danielle Bryant's muse. Her line played with these mischievous dots in black and white, along with splashes of color.

Faith Benoit dubbed her collection "Pandora's Box." It combined themes of a woman's innocence and sexuality with an industrial edge.

"My collection is the result of several inspirations ranging from Alice in Wonderland to video games, and even a semester abroad in London," she said.

Meaghan Curran called her line "Flying Helmet."

"I took inspiration from my own split fashion personality - from making clothes that range from the girly to the punk rock. It's important to feel confident in what you wear, so hopefully there is something in 'Flying Helmet' that makes everyone want to dance like a hipster," she said.

These nine seniors are just the tip of the iceberg … or in this case, one could say "stiletto." There are nine more seniors who brought their unique visions and creations to the fashion show.

"Runway '07" may mark the end of the school year for these fashion students, but it is also the beginning of their new careers.
